Orchestra

The Tonkünstler Orchestra, with its residencies at the Musikverein Wien, the Festspielhaus St. Pölten, and Grafenegg, is one of Austria's largest and most traditional symphony orchestras, serving as an important musical ambassador. The orchestra has a more than 70-year tradition of performing Sunday afternoon concerts at the Musikverein in Vienna.

The Festspielhaus St. Pölten was inaugurated by the Tonkünstler Orchestra in 1997, and at the renowned Grafenegg Festival, they perform each summer as the resident orchestra. They also open the summer season with the traditional Sommernachtsgala, which is broadcast on television and radio in Austria and several European countries.

The core of the orchestra's artistic work lies in the traditional repertoire, spanning from the Classical and Romantic periods to the music of the 20th century. The Tonkünstler Orchestra is also highly regarded by musicians, audiences, and the press for its innovative and alternative programming approaches.

Tonkünstler Orchestra with Federspiel

The Tonkünstler Orchestra is preserving the Viennese sound tradition, which is also reflected in the selection and use of its instruments. This is particularly evident in the percussion section, where Viennese timpani, bass drums, and snare drums with goat-skin heads, as well as other unique instruments, are used. Additionally, the distinctive Viennese playing style is carefully cultivated. These elements significantly contribute to the orchestra's unique sonic identity and ensure that the tradition of the "Viennese sound" remains vibrant and alive.
